Board President Matthew L. Earnest

Dear Quail Valley Friends,
This newsletter, along with our web site, represents a big step towards better communication. The clear and accurate availability of information is a vital part of what makes a community work well. I have seen many small victories in the few months since the launch of Quail Valley Lot Owners Association, but this newsletter is one of particular note. I trust that you will use this media and help us expand its worthiness through your participation.

Committee Reports

Playground Refurbishment Committee
A Word From: Tom and Kerry Postel, Chairs

We are looking to make improvements to our park. We feel this project should be completed in two phases.

The first phase will be to make the park a safer place for young children in our community to enjoy with their families. The first idea is to remove the dock. The dock structure has become very unstable and the teenagers are continually kicking off the slats. The dock will end up being an ongoing expense of repair, which we each will more than likely have to incur. There is graffiti written on the dock floor, and we have also seen teenagers sitting on the railing and walking along the top. This dock is an accident waiting to happen. We would like to install bollards to prohibit vehicles from driving down to the water's edge. Residents will still be able to carry their kayaks and canoes down there, as this is an extremely dangerous situation to have vehicles driving next to an area where young children are playing. A third option that we are considering is the installment of fencing around the park area.

The second phase will involve improving the playground equipment that is there and improving the overall look of the park area. We need both your input and time, and welcome any ideas or suggestions. Please contact the newsletter and the staff will forward your emails to our attention.

Thank you.

Nominating Committee
A Word From: Jeff Luck, Chair

The Nominating Committee is charged with identifying homeowners interested in serving on the QVLOA Board of Directors for the 2006/07 term. The Committee is chaired by Jeff Luck, assisted by David Chenevert, Lisa Stratton and Robert Dempsey as Committee members. Election of 2006/07 BOD officers will take place at the October 30, 2006 QVLOA general meeting. Homeowners will receive an information packet several weeks in advance of that meeting, around the middle of October. This packet will contain a ballot, as well as a proxy for those homeowners who prefer to allow another homeowner to cast a ballot. Only one vote per household is allowed. Please see the Announcements page on our web site for links to the October 30 meeting notice and agenda, as well as a proxy form for downloading. We are all neighbors. The Committee strongly urges all homeowners to participate in this upcoming election. Remember that the Board of Directors determines how our association fees! are spent, and we as residents must ensure that our community continues to improve under the most capable guidance of the new board. This can only be done with the full support of the entire Quail Valley community.

Thank you.

Neighborhood Watch

At the August 9, 2006 meeting, the members of the Quail Valley Board of Directors, along with the overwhelming support of the residents in attendance, approved the adoption of the Neighborhood Watch program for Quail Valley. Many thanks to all the residents who have generously offered their time, assistance and support towards the efforts to see that a neighborhood watch program is initiated here in our community. The first Neighborhood Watch meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at Minneola City Hall. Deputy Walter Wolf of the Community Services Division for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, and Lt. Greg Link, head of operations for the Lake County Sheriff's Department in Minneola will be attending. We welcome your ideas, concerns, and suggestions at this meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.

Thank you.

Get Ready for Hurricane Season
Don’t Get Caught Off-Guard Before The First Warning!!
Here Are Some Helpful Tips . . .

Emergency Operations & Hotlines for Lake County:

FEMA: 800-621-3362
FEMA for Lake County: 352-343-9420
American Red Cross: Lake County: 352-314-0883

Get Prepared Way Ahead of Season:

  • Have a one-week supply of non-perishable food available that needs little or no water in preparation.
  • Canned food
  • Household chlorine bleach
  • Two-week supply of prescription drugs
  • Cash or travelers checks
  • Blankets and sleeping bags
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Bottled water (one gallon per person per day for one week)
  • Water containers
  • Full tank of gas in car and extra set of keys
  • Important papers including valid ID
  • Personal items
  • Infant necessities, including a two-week supply of disposable diapers
  • Manual can opener
  • Games, books and toys for children
  • Boards, hammers and nails for windows
  • Disposable plates, glasses and utensils

Develop Your Family's Personal Emergency Plan. Include the Following:

  • Learn your evacuation zone, route and elevation of your home
  • Plan to obtain supplies necessary to protect your property
  • Arrange for safekeeping of pets and animals
  • Make a complete inventory of your personal property
  • Review your insurance policies. Homeowners policies do not cover flood damage
  • Know what documents you will need to establish home ownership and make insurance claims.
  • Trim or remove trees that can damage your home
  • Stock non-perishable food items and water for family to last one week

When a Warning is Issued:

  • Prepare for high winds by anchoring securely or bringing indoors anything that might blow away to be torn loose; garbage cans, garden tools, signs, lawn furniture, awnings and toys. Loose objects can become deadly projectiles with hurricane force winds.
  • Board up or shutter large windows. If you board, make sure you use good lumber that is securely fastened.
  • Add extra chlorine to swimming pools to prevent contamination and lower the pool water level to allow for increased rainfall.
